Caution about early corn hybrids and replanting

A Northeast Missouri agronomist tells Brownfield that growers should take their time in this delayed planting season before switching from the corn hybrid they’ve chosen to an early maturing one, “I would, you know, be very cautious about switching away from that hybrid too early because obviously it fits your acres well.” Jody Foutch, with Dekalb and Asgrow, says his advice to growers is to stay the course with their first corn hybrid choice until the first part of June, “What’s really interesting about these (early) hybrids is, the later you go into May planting dates, actually, those hybrids get shorter and shorter from a maturity standpoint.” Foutch says research by the University of Missouri backs up his advice on early corn hybrids, staying the course with regular hybrids through May.
