Red meat production hit record levels during January. The USDA says
commercial red meat production to start the year was 4.959 billion pounds, an
increase of 5% from January 2019.
Beef production was an all-time high for the month at 2.388 billion
pounds, up 3% on the year, with a 2% rise in the slaughter total to 2.899
million head and 12-pound gain in the average live weight at 1,375 pounds.
Pork was also a monthly record at 2.553 billion pounds, a year to year
jump of 8%, with slaughter 7% higher at 11.815 billion pounds and the average
live weight two pounds heavier at 290 pounds.
