Mitchell area organization raising awareness during Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Lana Loken is Co-Chair of the Davison County Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Coalition.

“It’s one of those months we really want to increase awareness, provide some activities for people to increase their knowledge, and learn how to kind of build a community to help support individuals that are struggling a little bit,” said Loken. “Unfortunately, it’s really needed right now because the statistics are telling us that it’s beginning to be a trend upward,” she continued.

Loken says the Coalition is offering Q-P-R training. “It basically teaches you a little bit of how to understand the signs and symptoms of individuals that are struggling and what you can do to help them in that moment,” Loken stated.

The first session is on September 14th from 6 to 7:30 pm and the second on September 21st from noon to 1pm both at the BankWest community room. To register for the free sessions contact the Mitchell Area United Way by calling 605-996-3915 or online at mitchellunitedway.org.
