The 87th Annual State Amateur Baseball Tourney started last night with two games at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, hosted by the Mitchell Baseball Association. There were plenty of runs, hits and errors combined in game two that made this ten run game feel like it was a one or two run game, especially early. Corsica-Stickney and Wynot (Neb.) combined for 22 runs, 29 hits, 11 errors and eight walks as the Expos ended the Horned Frogs season 16-6. Wynot, 16-11 overall, advances to play Winner/Colome at 5:30pm Sunday in the 2nd Round, while Corsica-Stickney finishes 4-16 overall this season and finished 2-4 in the post season.
In the first game of the night Winner/Colome and Connor Hopkins shut down Lennox 3-0 on a four hit shutout for Hopkins. The Pheasants remained focus as it was a year ago they were beaten in the 1st Round after coming in as Tourney favorites. Winner/Colome and Wynot Sunday at 5:30pm at Cadwell Park.
Day two of the State Amateur Baseball Tourney has four games on the schedule that starts at 11:00am. Harrisburg battles Crofton Nebraska followed by Salem and Plankinton around 1:00pm. The night session has Kimball/White Lake taking on Tabor at 5:30pm followed by Alexandria against Lake Norden. KORN News Radio will broadcast the final three games today from Cadwell Park. At the Central Plains Region in Sioux Falls for American Legion baseball, Renner Post 307 lost 4-3 to Oshkosh Wisconsin and Sioux Falls West lost 9-8 to Edina Minnesota. Today at 9:00am Renner plays Dubuque Iowa followed by Sioux Falls West against Fargo North Dakota at 12:30pm.
The State Class A Amateur Baseball Tourney will start this weekend in Brookings and then move to Mitchell for the final weekend August 16th-18th. First Round games in Class A has Castlewood against Yankton at 5:30pm Friday followed by Brookings against the Sioux Falls Squirrels around 8:00pm. Saturday night at 5:00pm the Sioux Falls Brewers plays Aberdeen at 5:00pm followed by Renner against the Sturgis A’s at 7:30pm. Two teams will be eliminated this weekend in Brookings in Class A. All games will be played at Bob Sheldon Field in Brookings this weekend.
The monthly Mitchell Athletic Booster Club meeting will be held on Monday at 5:30pm at the Mitchell High School Library. Items on the agenda include the start of the new school year and the upcoming Kernel Bowl on August 31st. The public is invited to attend the meeting Monday.

The first high school sporting event of the 2019 fall sports season is already August 13th with Kernel girl’s tennis in Huron for a tri-angular with Huron and Aberdeen Roncalli. Tennis action starts at 2:30pm. Friday August 16th the Kernel soccer teams will host Sturgis at 4:00pm for the girls and 6:00pm for the boys at Joe Quintal Stadium. The Kernels will also host Spearfish on Saturday at 11:00amd and 1:00pm at Joe Quintal. Boys golf will start competition on August 19th at the Sioux Falls Washington Invite starting at 8:00am at Willow Run Golf Course.
