Local Sports for Thursday July 11th

Something tells me both Alexandria and Winner/Colome will be going deep into the State Amateur Baseball  Tourney when it comes back to Mitchell in August.  Last night Cole Wenande drove in four runs and Tyson Gau struck out nine to lift Alexandria to a 7-2 Sunshine League amateur baseball win over Winner/Colome in Alexandria.  Alexandria, 11-5 overall and 10-2 in the Sunshine League, hosts Mount Vernon on Tuesday in another huge match-up for top seeding purposes in District 5B.  Winner/Colome, 10-3 overall and 8-3 in the Sunshine League, hosts Platte today.

It took an extra inning, but an error sent home the game-winning run for Canova in the 10th inning to push it past Madison 3-2 and stay undefeated in Corn Belt League Baseball action.  Derek Miller fanned 11 for the Gang in his 7.1-inning start.  Justin Miller pitched the final 2.2 to earn the win.  Canova, 14-2 overall and 13-0 in the Cornbelt League, plays at Colman today.

Dimock-Emery plays at Platte on Sunday.  In amateur baseball Corsica-Stickney plays at Mount Vernon tonight, and the Parkston Mudcats will host Wagner tonight.  In the Pony Hills Plankinton travels to Wessington Springs and Kimball/White Lake hosts Chamberlain.  In the Corn Belt Salem travels to Dell Rapids PBR.

The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team had the hot bats in the first game of a doubleheader against Brandon Valley yesterday at Drake Field. It resulted in a 9-1 win, but Mitchell fell 7-5 in the second game.  Mitchell racked up 14 hits, including four doubles, to help it jump out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the first game.  Mitchell Junior Legion, 16-15 overall, travels to Yankton on Friday and travels to Sioux Falls East on Monday.  The Junior Legion Regional Tourney will be held July 19th-21st and the State Junior Legion State Tourney will be in Rapid City Juy26th-30th.

The Mitchell Post 18 baseball team, 24-14 overall and winners of six in a row, plays Lakeville South Minnesota at 2:00pm and Omaha Skutt Nebraska at 4:30pm in the Gopher Classic in Bloomington, Minnesota on Friday.  Post 18 will also play Hibbing Minnesota and Osseo Minnesota on Saturday before closing out their schedule against Bloomington Gold Minnesota on Sunday night.  Depending on how Mitchell does will determine if they advance to Monday’s play, which Post 18 did last year at the Gopher Classic.

The Mitchell 15/16 Gold Teener baseball team will be in the Midsummer Classic in Sioux Falls this weekend. The next and last home games of the season will be on July 23rd against Yankton.  The State Tourney for Mitchell Gold will be in Renner August 1st-4th.

The Mitchell 14’s Black will be in the Sioux Falls Midsummer Classic this weekend and then will be on the road the rest of the summer.  The State Tourney for Mitchell Black will be in Pierre August 1st-4th.
