Local Sports for Thursday September 5th

After taking the opening set in front of a huge home crowd, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team did not have enough as they fell to No. 7 Northwestern College in four sets in Great Plains Athletic Conference match in the Corn Palace last night.  Set scores were: 25-22, 24-26, 15-25, 20-25 in favor of the Red Raiders.  Northwestern improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the GPAC while DWU fell to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Emily Brunsing led the team with 15 kills, five digs and a block, Becky Frick added 12 kills and 17 digs for the Tigers while Mallory Cooper notched 21 digs and Dannielle Burns chipped in 19 digs.  Bridgett Knobbe finished with 38 assists and seven digs from her setter position.  The Tigers step out of conference play as they take on Presentation College and York College at Noon and 4:00pm on Saturday in the Corn Palace.

 

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team saw it drop two spots at the Blue River Classic in the team standings, despite improving by eight shots. DWU ended with a two-day score of 604 to place seventh at the Highlands Golf Course.  Bennett Lundy shot a six-over-par 149 to place 18th and lead the Tigers. Mitchell native Cade Carpenter (151) took 25th, followed by Justice Morrison and Devan Weelborg both shooting a 153 to take 36th overall individually.  Iowa Western Community College won the invite by shooting a 575.

 

The Tiger women’s team shot a 363 to place sixth in the 11-team field at the College of St. Mary’s Classic in Omaha.  Ronae Klein led the Tigers, shooting a 16-over-par 88 to finish in 14th.  Mitchell native Ashley Zimmer (89) and Erin Moncur (91) placed 17th and 23rd respectively, while Megan Hinker shot a 95 to take 33rd.  The men compete in the Northwestern & Dordt Invitational on Monday, while the women are back in action in the Bellevue Invitational on Monday.

 

The Kernel girl’s tennis team will be back in action today and will keep busy thru the weekend.  Today the tennis team will be in Sioux Falls for a tri-angular with O’Gorman and Watertown starting at 12:30pm.  Friday the Kernels will host Pierre and Yankton at Hitchcock Park starting at 11:00am and then the Kernels travel to Huron for a quadrangular with Huron, Aberdeen Central and Brandon Valley on Saturday at 9:00am.

 

The Kernel girls’ soccer team will be in Garretson today to play at the Blue Dragons with start time set for 5:00pm.  The soccer team will return to action after tonight next Thursday at Watertown.  The boys’ soccer team is off until next Thursday at Watertown.

 

The Mitchell Kernel football team will be at Sioux Falls Christian, a Class 11A Football team, on Friday night.  Mitchell is coming off a 56-27 win at home against Douglas Saturday night for the Kernel Bowl and now will get a test from one of the top five teams in 11A Football.  The #3 ranked in Class 11A Chargers beat Pine Ridge 62-0 last week.  Mitchell is ranked #4 in 11AA.  Kick-off is slated for 7:00pm Friday from Bob Young Field in Sioux falls, the home of the USF Cougars.  KORN News radio Pre-Game Show starts at 6:30pm Friday night.

 

The Q107-3 Football Game of the Week will be in Avon as the Pirates host the Highlanders of Scotland in the Featured Game of the Week on 107.3 FM and on-line at q107radio.com.  Kick-off time is set for 7:00pm Friday.

 

The DWU Tiger football team, 0-1 overall, will have their home opener against Presentation College on Saturday at Joe Quintal with kick-off set for 1:00pm.  Also, in September the Tiger football team will make trips to Briar Cliff and Dordt while hosting Northwestern College in the GPAC.  Blue and White Days homecoming game will be October 5th against Doane.

 

The SDSU Jackrabbit football team, 0-1 overall, are scheduled to open the home season Saturday night in Brookings by hosting Long Island University.  Kickoff for the Dairy Drive game is set for 6:00pm at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings.  Pre-game on KORN News Radio starts at 5:00pm Saturday.

 

The Mitchell Kernel volleyball team, 1-4 overall, will play Brandon Valley Tuesday in Brandon.  Mitchell just lost to Brandon Valley at the Huron Invitational last weekend in the Huron Tourney.  The home opener will be September 14th against Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

 

The Mitchell Kernel boys golf team will play at the Yankton Invitational on September 13th at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club. Mitchell was scheduled to play in the Chamberlain Invitational today, but it’s been canceled due to wet conditions at the Chamberlain Country Club.

 

The John Stiegelmeier Radio Show airs every Monday night from Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Brookings from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on KORN News Radio.  The hour-long show, hosted by Tyler Merriam, can be heard on FM 101.3, AM 1490 and on-line at kornradio.com.  The program airs LIVE throughout the season every Monday night.  In addition to Coach Stig, guests will include other Jackrabbit football coaches and student-athletes all season.

 

The USD Coyote Football team will open their season on Saturday against Montana in the Dakota Dome in Vermillion with kick-off slated for 2:00pm.  The Coyotes also play at Oklahoma on September 7th in Norman Oklahoma with a 6:00pm kick-off.
