HURON, S.D. – Mitchell went 1-3 Saturday at the Huron Invitational, facing three highly ranked teams before closing the day with a 2-0 victory over Spearfish.
The Kernels opened the tournament against Class B No. 1 Chester and fell 2-0. Mitchell then dropped a 2-0 decision to Class B No. 3 Northwestern Area before falling 2-0 to Class A No. 1 Dell Rapids.
Mitchell finished the day with a 2-0 win over Class AA opponent Spearfish. The Kernels hit .306 as a team in the victory, recording 19 kills on 49 attacks with four errors.
Freshman Nia Talley led Mitchell with nine kills against Spearfish, while sophomore Ashley Haring and freshman CeCe Morgan each added four kills. Talley also recorded five aces and four digs in the victory.
Against Dell Rapids, Talley and Haring led the Kernels with five and four kills, respectively, while Morgan added four. Talley also recorded six digs.
Talley and Morgan led Mitchell with nine kills apiece against Northwestern Area. Talley also had six digs, while junior Londyn Hajek added nine digs.
Against Chester, Haring led Mitchell with six kills, while Talley and Morgan each had four. Hajek led the Kernels with 10 digs, followed by Talley with eight.
Mitchell is 2-3 on the season and will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against No. 1 Harrisburg. The match will be broadcast on KORN News Radio FM 101.3/AM 1490 and KORNRadio.com
