MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell volleyball will be at No. 1 Harrisburg on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. The Kernels are 2-3 on the season after wins last week vs. Sturgis and Spearfish.
— Mitchell boys golf returns to action Tuesday at the Hub City Invite in Aberdeen. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. at Lee Park Golf Course.
— Mitchell soccer is back in action on Tuesday at Pierre with the girls match at 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm.
— Mitchell football travels to Spearfish on Friday at 7 pm CST. Coverage starts with the KORNer Booth pregame show at 6 pm.
— The Mitchell and Mitchell Christian cross country teams return to action on Friday at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’ soccer host Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday at 6 pm.
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will play Sept. 4-5 at the Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska. The Tigers are 8-1 on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan football opens GPAC play on Saturday against Doane at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State linebacker Chase Van Tol and offensive tackle Quinten Christensen have been honored by the Missouri Valley Football Conference for their performances in Saturday’s 70-7 win over Stetson. Van Tol was named Defensive Player of the Week after recovering two first-half fumbles. He also had two tackles, including a tackle for loss, and broke up a pass. Christensen, a senior from Wessington Springs, was named Offensive Lineman of the Week.
— South Dakota State volleyball hosts No. 1 ranked Nebraska in Brookings on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer host Colorado College on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State football will be at Northwestern of the Big Ten on at 7 pm on the Big Ten Network.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD redshirt freshman quarterback Austyn Modrzewski has been named the National Freshman of the Week and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive and Newcomer of the Week. Modrzewski made his first collegiate start Saturday against Central Connecticut State, completing 16 of 20 passes for 304 yards and six touchdowns. He also led USD with 81 rushing yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run His six touchdown passes tied the Coyotes’ single-game record.
— USD volleyball will host Utah Valley Thursday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
— USD women’s soccer Coyotes host Idaho on Thursday at 6 pm.
— USD football visits Northern Colorado on Saturday at 7 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Ryan Jeffers had two homers, while Walker Jenkins went deep for the first time in his major league career as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 11-1. Taj Bradley struck out nine in seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. Game two of the three game series is Tuesday at 6:40 pm.
NBA
— Minnesota Timberwolves draft pick Trey Kaufman-Renn is suing the NCAA in an effort to return to college basketball for a sixth season. The former Purdue forward was selected 59th overall by Minnesota in June and played for the Wolves in Summer League. Kaufman-Renn redshirted a season after suffering an injury. His attorney argues he should be allowed to seek an additional year of eligibility under circumstances that existed under the NCAA’s previous rules. A hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Indiana. Kaufman-Renn has not signed with Minnesota and could play for the Iowa Wolves of the G-League if his bid for another college season is denied.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— UCLA has fired athletic director Martin Jarmond, citing a significant financial deficit within the Bruins’ athletic department. Jarmond had been with UCLA since 2020 and is owed about $6.5 million on the remaining years of his contract. Tim Harris, a former Los Angeles Lakers executive, will serve as interim CEO and athletic director without pay. Jarmond oversaw UCLA’s move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten and the hiring of new football coach Bob Chesney.

— Argentina star Lionel Messi is retiring from international soccer after 21 years with the national team. The 39-year-old announced his decision Monday, ending a career that included the 2022 World Cup championship and a record-tying six World Cup appearances. Messi played 207 matches for Argentina and finishes as the country’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals, including 21 in World Cup play. He will continue playing at the club level with Miami.
MLB
— Alex Bregman hit three of Chicago’s franchise-record nine home runs as the Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 17-3. Clay Holmes pitched six scoreless innings for the Cubs, who hit five homers off Milwaukee starter Kyle Harrison in the first four innings and three more against position player Andrew Vaughn late in the game. The nine HR’s matched the second-most by one team in a major league game. Toronto hit 10 in a win over Baltimore in 1987.
— Trevor Story drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning after Seattle walked the two batters before him intentionally, giving the Boston Red Sox to a 9-8 comeback victory over the Mariners.
— Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run homer and Cam Smith added a two-run double to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. It was the fourth victory in five games for the Astros, who remained two games ahead of second-place Texas in the AL West.
— Colton Cowser made a spectacular leaping catch above the center-field fence for the final out, robbing Jake McCarthy of a game-winning homer and preserving the Baltimore Orioles’ 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Baltimore is ½ game behind Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Jacob deGrom allowed a second-inning single in seven shutout innings as the Texas Rangers beat the Athletics 8-1.
— Vaughn Grissom drove in four runs, while rookie Walbert Ureña pitched seven innings as the Los Angeles Angels ended a seven-game losing streak with a 10-1 victory over the New York Yankees.
— Bryson Stott hit a homer as the Philadelphia Phillies picked up a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies have won five straight, 14 of their past 16 and finished with a 21-7 record in August, which was the best mark in the big leagues. They’re now just four games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
— Manny Machado had four hits, while Michael King struck out six in six innings as the San Diego Padres shutout the Cincinnati Reds 5-0. San Diego holds a ½ game lead over Arizona for the final NL Wild Card spot.
— Robert Stock pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning for his first major league win in seven years as the New York Mets beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2.
— Rafael Devers hit his 30th home run of the season as the San Francisco Giants snapped the Atlanta Braves’ seven-game winning streak with a 7-3 win.
— Daylen Lile homered twice and drove in four runs as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 6-3.
