MITCHELL KERNELS
— No. 1-ranked Harrisburg volleyball defeated Mitchell 3-0 on Tuesday night. The Tigers won 25-15, 25-12 and 25-10. Nia Talley led Mitchell with 12 kills, while Sloan Stoebner had 12 assists. Harrisburg improved to 3-0 with its 95th consecutive victory over a Class AA opponent. Mitchell falls to 2-4. The Kernels will be at Huron on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
— Pierre swept Mitchell in a soccer doubleheader Tuesday, with both Governors teams winning 4-0. The Pierre girls improved to 5-0, while the Mitchell girls fell to 3-2. The Mitchell boys fell to 2-3 on the season. The Kernels are back at home when they host Yankton next Tuesday, Sept. 8.
— Mitchell boys golf finished tied for 12th on Tuesday at the Hub City Invitational in Aberdeen with a team score of 317. Asher Dannenbring led Mitchell with a 75, finishing 25th in a field of 98 golfers. Eli Konrad shot a season-best 79, while Ian Weber also set a season best with an 80. Mitchell returns to action Sept. 11 at the Yankton Invitational.
— Mitchell football travels to Spearfish on Friday at 7 pm CST. Coverage starts with the KORNer Booth pregame show at 6 pm.
— The Mitchell and Mitchell Christian cross country teams return to action on Friday at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan is moving up its football home opener Saturday because of the heat. The Tigers will host Doane at 11 a.m. at Joe Quintal Field, two hours earlier than originally scheduled. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 95 degrees, with heat index values near 100. The game is the GPAC opener for both teams. DWU is coming off a 35-27 loss to Dakota State.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s golf opened its season with an eighth-place finish at the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton. The Tigers finished eighth out of 14 teams. Ben Wilber and Dakota Munger tied for DWU’s top finish at 11-over par, with Wilber placing 20th individually after a final-round 75. The Tigers return to action September 14 at the Siouxland Invitational.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday at 6 pm.
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will play Sept. 4-5 at the Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska. The Tigers are 8-1 on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball opens its home schedule Wednesday night against top-ranked Nebraska. The Jackrabbits host the Cornhuskers at 7 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings. Nebraska is 2-0 and already has a win over second-ranked Texas. SDSU is coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and is picked to win the Summit League after going 16-0 in conference play last season. The Jackrabbits then host Western Illinois, Northern Arizona and Bradley this weekend in the SDSU Invitational.
— SDSU’S Sylvie Zgonc has earned the first Summit League Volleyball Player of the Week award this season. The senior outside hitter totaled 54 kills in three matches over the weekend in Malibu, California, averaging 4.1 kills per set. Zgonc also hit .336 and recorded 26 digs. She had 23 kills against Sacramento State and 22 against Villanova.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer host Colorado College on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State football will be at Northwestern of the Big Ten on Saturday at 7 pm on the Big Ten Network.

— USD volleyball will host Utah Valley Thursday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
— USD women’s soccer Coyotes host Idaho on Thursday at 6 pm.
— USD football visits Northern Colorado on Saturday at 7 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Royce Lewis and Ryan Jeffers hit three-run homers during a 10-run sixth inning as the Minnesota Twins picked up a 15-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Kody Clemens homered for the second straight game and Kalen Culpepper had two hits and three RBIs for the Twins, who won their third straight game after losing seven of eight. Minnesota is 3 ½ games behind Cleveland for the third wild- card spot in the AL, with three other teams between them. The Twins look for the three-game sweep of the Tigers on Wednesday at 6:40 pm.

— The Los Angeles Angels are being sold to Stan Kroenke, owner of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Premier League champion Arsenal. Kroenke Sports and Entertainment has reached a deal to purchase controlling ownership from Arte Moreno, with the sale expected to close in early 2027 pending Major League Baseball approval. The Angels are headed for their 11th straight losing season and 12th consecutive season without a playoff appearance. Moreno has owned the team since 2003.
NFL
— CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo has pleaded no contest to an operating-while-intoxicated charge stemming from his July arrest in Wisconsin. Romo lost his driving privileges for six months, must complete an alcohol assessment and have an ignition interlock device installed for at least a year. Romo apologized, saying he takes responsibility and is working with doctors to address his health. CBS has placed Romo on leave, with J.J. Watt filling in as the network’s lead NFL analyst.
GOLF
— Tiger Woods is expected to change his not guilty plea Wednesday in a DUI case stemming from a March rollover crash in Florida. Court documents show Woods has a plea conference hearing scheduled in Martin County. Woods was arrested after his Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled onto its side. He told deputies he was looking at his phone and changing the radio station when he crashed. A Breathalyzer showed no alcohol, but deputies reported signs of impairment and found two pain pills in his pocket.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The SEC says it will not back down from its rule preventing former NFL players from returning to college football. Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman, president of the SEC executive committee, says the league is prepared to defend the rule and supports strong penalties for violations. The dispute centers on LSU and two former NFL players who have committed to the Tigers. A Louisiana judge has barred the SEC from enforcing the rule while the legal case continues. A hearing is scheduled Thursday, ahead of LSU’s game against Clemson Saturday.

— The St. Louis Cardinals hit five home runs, including a pair by Thomas Saggese and a two-run shot from Jordan Walker, in a 13-8 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramón Urías and Joshua Báez also went deep for the Cardinals.
— Christian Yelich capped Milwaukee’s four-run sixth inning with a tiebreaking two-run homer, helping the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4.
— Brandon Lowe scored from third on a San Francisco infield error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Giants 13-12. Oneil Cruz had four hits and drove in four runs for Pittsburgh, which recovered after blowing a six-run lead.
— Spencer Jones homered and drove in three runs, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. also went deep and finished with three hits as the New York Yankees pulled away for a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Bryce Harper reached base five times, while Jesús Luzardo threw 6 2/3 innings as the Philadelphia Phillies won their sixth straight game by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1. The Phillies have won 15 of their last 17 and are now just three games behind the Atlanta Braves for the NL East lead.
— Gavin Williams struck out a career-high 13 and allowed just two singles in seven innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
— Colson Montgomery had two hits and two RBIs, while Randal Grichuk added a two-run double to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros.
— Brandon Nimmo set season highs with four hits and five RBIs as the Texas Rangers beat the Athletics 8-5. Texas pulled within one game of Houston atop the AL West.
— Jose Trevino drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. San Diego holds a ½ game lead over Arizona for the final NL Wild Card spot.
— Freddy Peralta pitched six innings against his former team, while Yandy Díaz homered and doubled as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Mets 6-2. Peralta, acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline, retired 17 of his final 18 batters.
— Seattle’s Lazaro Montes homered in his big league debut, while Randy Arozarena hit a three-run homer as the Mariners ended a five-game losing streak with a 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.
— Yohandy Morales homered in his first major league game, while Jared Simpson earned the win in relief in his own debut, helping the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5.
— Graham Pauley homered and tripled to drive in four runs as the Miami Marlins defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-3.
— TJ Rumfield broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer as the Colorado Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 to snap their franchise-record home losing streak at 10 games.
