Tomorrow is never guaranteed and an expert on family farm succession planning says it is never too early to begin the planning process.
Ron Hanson, professor emeritus with the University of Nebraska and speaker on passing down family farms tells Brownfield addressing the “what if’s” of farm succession is something many families try to avoid.
“To someday admit that I may not be on my farm, or I may not be operating or managing my farm, is very hard for a lot of farm producers.”
But, Hanson says communicating within the family and including experts like attorneys and accountants in succession planning is key to keeping the family farm.
