Land prices up in southwest Minnesota

There are pockets of the Midwest where farmland values are
on the rise.

University of Minnesota Extension educator David Bau says land prices in eight of 14 counties surveyed in southwest Minnesota increased between 2017 and 2018.

“Bare farmland with no improvements (saw) average sale prices go up about 3.9 percent.”

He tells Brownfield high cash rents and relatively low interest rates are supporting land values.

“I think other opportunities to invest money like bank deposits are getting up there, going up from point-zero something to a one or two in front, but still a lower rate compared to what you get for long-term average return from land.
