US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told the House
Ways and Means Committee this morning President Trump remains committed to protecting
American workers, farmers and ranchers, and economic system from China’s unfair
trade practices.
He says one of the biggest areas they’ve addressed throughout
the trade negotiations are the non-tariff trade barriers. Lighthizer says he’s hopeful they made some
headway. “We understand how important
this is – them changing their processes,” he says. “Getting it more in line with international
norms – that’s something we spent a lot of time one – and have it be science
based. We’ll see where that turns
out. I don’t want to suggest those talks
are over – but we spent a lot of time on it though.”
He says the President is insistent on an agreement that is enforceable,
but also changes the pattern of practice in several areas. But also, a whole variety of specific impediments to trade
and unfair practices in agriculture and the area of services.
Lighthizer says
there won’t likely be one agreement that addresses all the changes – but
they’ll address the most import issues first and then continue work through
other issues as they arise.
