Beef producers from the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership
are gaining ground over the US in Japan’s beef market. According to the Nikkei Asian Review, January
beef imports from the US increased 21 percent year over year, but its share of
the market dropped 6 percent.
Beef producers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and
Mexico benefited from lower tariffs and saw a 56 percent surge in sales to
start the year. Tariffs on beef imports
from those countries dropped to 27.5 percent once the agreement was put into
place and will continue to drop annually until they reach 9 percent.
