Due to the combination of rain and melting snow numerous streets in Mitchell are flooded and closed to traffic. Mayor Bob Everson is asking drivers to avoid driving through the orange cones around town marking streets that are closed to traffic. He’s also asking drivers to slow down on flooded streets that are open to traffic.
There are no travel advisories issued Hanson, Charles Mix and Douglas counties due to flooding. Interstate 90 is closed from Chamberlain west to the Wyoming line. A winter storm warning takes effect from 1am through 7 pm Thursday.
Davison County emergency management director Jeff Bathke is advising travelers to please use caution on county roads. They are extremely muddy and have water over the road in several spots. The County and the Townships are working to flag areas and get culverts open, but there is just too much water coming through them.
Bathke says the county has 60,000 sandbags available. Users need to access their own sand and fill them, but the county has bundles of bags available. You may contact Bathke at 999-2863.
