MITCHELL, S.D. – Southerly winds will strengthen ahead of an approaching cold front Friday, with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph expected across much of the area.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says a few locations, mainly in southwestern Minnesota, could see gusts as high as 45 mph. Mitchell is forecast to see gusts around 40 mph during the late morning and afternoon, with winds gradually decreasing into the evening.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, and high-profile vehicles could be affected by the strong winds. The dry and windy conditions will also increase the risk of fires.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of the region through Friday evening.
