SIOUX FALLS – Mitchell finished second in the team standings at the ESD Conference girls tennis championship Monday and Tuesday at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
The Kernels scored 308.5 points, finishing behind team champion Harrisburg with 359. Aberdeen Central was third with 171.
Mitchell had three individual champions. Elliot Smith won the No. 4 singles title, defeating Harrisburg’s Abbie Frye 10-7 in the championship match. Charlee Cimpl won the No. 5 singles title with a 10-4 victory over Brandon Valley’s Leighton Guetter. Cimpl and Taryn Bultje also won the No. 3 doubles championship, defeating Brandon Valley’s Grace Dew and Taetum Horstmeyer 10-5.
Katie Morgan placed second at No. 1 singles, while Bultje was second at No. 6 singles. Mia Larson finished fifth at No. 2 singles, and Ava Prunty was third at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Morgan and Prunty placed third at No. 1, while Larson and Smith finished second at No. 2.
The Kernels will compete in the Class AA state tournament Oct. 8-9 in Rapid City.
