Even as a dangerous winter storm is battering areas from the Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic Coast, a trailing system is already affecting parts of the western U.S.
With only a 3- to 4-day separation between storms, there will be little opportunity to prepare for another round of heavy rain, heavy snow, high winds, or severe thunderstorms, depending on location.
Additionally, Eastern soils that are being saturated by the current storm system will be more susceptible to flood-related issues when the second storm arrives.
Finally, progressively colder air will be drawn southward in the wake of each storm, with temperatures possibly plunging below 0°F by early next week throughout the Midwest and as far south as Texas’ northern panhandle and parts of Oklahoma.
Readings below -30°F may occur on the northern High Plains, threatening any winter wheat lacking a protective snow cover.
