A warmer-than-usual start to year in SD

South Dakota’s State Climatologist says a warmer-than-usual start to winter has some benefits for the state’s farmers and ranchers.

Laura Edwards with South Dakota State University Extension tells Brownfield the ground hasn’t frozen yet in many areas, which means the end of the year rain and snow has soaked right into the soil.

“This sets us up better for the spring season to start with row cropping and alfalfa hay pasture areas.
