Ag industry awaiting USDA’s third proposal for the Packers and Stockyards Rule

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release at least three new regulations under the Packers and Stockyards Act and a government affairs specialist is interested to see the third proposed rule.

Ethan Lane with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says the harm to competition rule is being reviewed at the Office of Management and Budget.

“At some point in the next few months, they’ll release that rule in proposed form for public comment.”

Lane says “that rule will be at the heart of the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration rule push we saw during the Obama administration.”

USDA will finalize the second rule in early May, which sets clearer standards on discrimination and retaliation in livestock contracts under the Packers and Stockyards Act.
