Agronomist says corn needs rain and growers should scout for stalk health

Purdue Extension Agronomist Bob Nielsen says recent drought-like conditions have negatively impacted the corn crop.

“There are restricted root systems from the early season wetness and soil compaction and the onset of drought symptoms occurred very quickly because of the restricted root systems,” he says.

He tells Brownfield the corn needs rain as well as sunny

conditions in September and October to mature and dry down the crop.

“We need to get back on a timely rainfall track as well as to maintain some fairly moderate temperatures in order to help the grain fill of this crop as we finish it off,” he says.
