African swine fever continues to cause disruptions to the
global pork market. The USDA’s Foreign
Ag Service says Poland’s swine inventories dropped 4 percent in 2019 and
attributes much of the contraction due to the ongoing battle with the disease. The agency says production will remain under
pressure in 2020 as the disease continues to spread in the country’s eastern
and central regions and in western Poland near the German border. ASF was recently found in a wild boar in Poland
just 12 kilometers from Germany.
Poland exports about $1 billion worth of pork onto the global market and has been one of the fastest-growing pork exporters in recent years.
