The USDA and FDA are holding a joint public meeting on the regulation of lab-produced, cell-cultured meat.
In his opening comments, FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the development of cell-cultured meat is advancing rapidly.
“Reports indicate that the cost of using cell-cultured technology to develop food products derived from livestock is one-fiftieth (1/50th) of what it was just a few years ago,” Gottlieb said. “While I don’t have a crystal ball to see the future, I wouldn’t be surprised to see cell-cultured burgers on restaurant menus in the coming years.”
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said new proteins should be treated the same as past products.
