Congressman questions lack of Milk Loss payments to cooperatives

A New York Congressman wants to know why dairy farmers and cooperatives impacted by storms have not received promised assistance.

Republican Nick Langworthy told Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack during a House Ag Committee hearing Wednesday that winter storm Elliot ravaged the northeast in December of 2022, “Resulting in the closure of dairy plants and extensive dumping of milk. Farmers in my district faced the grim reality of being unable to have their milk collected and delivered, compounding an already dire situation.”

Langworthy told the Secretary he appreciates the USDA’s rollout of the Milk Loss Program for producers but wonders when the USDA will pay on cooperative losses.
