An agronomist with Seed Consultants says he is concerned prolonged dry weather in some parts of the Midwest have hurt corn root development.
Bill McDonald says forecasted timely rains will be helpful if the crops do have a poor root system.
“I always liken it to a 10 year old boy that goes from 5’8” to 6’2” in a years time-he has trouble with his knees,” he says. “I’m afraid we could possibly have the same issue with corn because we don’t have that foundation underneath it.”
He tells Brownfield farmers should also scout fields for any stalk quality issues and not be afraid to dry corn if needed.
