Crop rotation a big factor when considering organic soybeans

A major consideration for farmers looking to capitalize on high organic soybean demand is what crop or crops to rotate with it. 

Mercaris CEO Kellee James says the U.S. has imported the equivalent of 27 million bushels of organic soybeans, while producing just 7 million.

“That means we could probably stand (to grow) 650,000 acres of organic soybeans and find a market for that. That’s true, but just think about the other part of that equation (which is) organic depends on a rotation.”

During her presentation at the Organic and Non-GMO Forum in Minneapolis Tuesday, James says if the rotational crop was organic corn, up to 40 million bushels would need to find a home.
