Delayed planting leads to emergence problems for corn

Delayed planting has led to emergence problems for some corn growers.

Winfield United agronomist Jon Zuk says wet conditions across northern Iowa and southern Minnesota forced many farmers to work fields that weren’t completely fit, resulting in compaction and sidewall smearing.

“In just about every tilled field I was in (the last two weeks) I could see right to the line of how deep that planter or digger pass went through because of where that compaction layer was drawn with that equipment.”

He tells Brownfield soils are in better shape, but planting isn’t finished.
