Ditch the plow, cover up and grow diversity

David Montgomery, geomorphology professor at the University of Washington and author of three books on soil degradation and health provides farmers with a recipe to give life back to soil.

“That recipe of ditching the plow, covering up with cover

crops and growing a diversity of plants, whether it’s a diversity of cash crops

or having a few cash crops with diverse cover crops – that’s a recipe for feeding

the microbial life in the soil that is beneficial to crops.”

Montgomery says he has traveled to farms around the world and found that simply changing the way one thinks about soil can return a bigger profit.
