The latest weekly crop update for Iowa indicates concerns about dryness are increasing.
The USDA says nearly half the state’s topsoil and subsoil moisture is considered short to very short.
Crop conditions reflect the weather with corn considered good to excellent dropping slightly on the week to 76 percent. Development is close to normal with 30 percent at the dough stage or beyond.
For soybeans, 73 percent is considered good to excellent compared to 75 percent a week ago. Fifty-two percent of the crop is setting pods, six days behind last year and one day behind the five-year average.
