The pork industry has been working alongside the USDA to strengthen protections to prevent African Swine Fever from entering the US.
USDA Undersecretary Greg Ibach outlined enhanced protection measures that are being implemented to help prevent the disease from entering the US to pork delegates this week.
National Pork Board CEO Bill Even says as the virus continues to spread throughout Asia – job number one has to be prevention.
“You have all these pigs that are ill that are perhaps shedding virus,” he says. “Suddenly you’ve multiplied the possibility of somebody inadvertently bringing something back to the North American continent – either Mexico, the US, or Canada.”
He tells Brownfield additional measures – like adding to the Beagle Brigade and amping up security at ports are also being implemented.
