A dairy cooperative has written to the Food and Drug Administration, urging it to enforce dairy standards of identity.
Jeff Lyon is General Manager at FarmFirst Dairy Cooperative. He tells Brownfield the agency has released draft guidance for labeling plant-based milk alternatives and wants public comments. Lyon says FDA’s suggestion for voluntary nutrition statements on labels is good but, “The FDA does have a responsibility on the nutritional side of things to make sure that consumers know what they’re purchasing, for all products that we’re talking about, so people can make decisions.”
Lyon says when comparing the nutrition of milk against alternatives, consumers aren’t getting enough information.
