The Federal Communications Commission is proposing a fund of $20.4
billion to get high-speed internet to rural homes. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai says the
Rural Digital Opportunity Fund is the biggest step the agency has taken to
close the digital divide, the areas that lack access to adequate broadband.
In the first of two phases the FCC would target $16 billion to areas not served
by broadband service. The second phase will focus on unserved households in
areas partially served.
