The J.R. Simplot Company has secured gene editing technology licenses which could be used to reduce food waste for certain fruits and vegetables.
The joint agreement with Corteva, the Broad Institute and Harvard will allow the Simplot company to develop new varieties of potatoes, avocados and strawberries with CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
Doug Cole with Simplot Plant Sciences tells Brownfield about a third of potatoes, avocados and strawberries are lost each year from bruising and browning, and gene editing could help keep food more self-stable.
