Hot weather across the nation’s mid-section will continue to expand and intensify across the western and central U.S. During the next few days, temperatures will routinely exceed 100° across the southern half of the Plains and the Desert Southwest. Late in the week, however, warmth will return across much of the East, while cooler air will overspread the Far West. Five-day rainfall totals will be greatest, locally 1 to 3 inches, across the northern U.S., although similar amounts can be expected from the central Gulf Coast to Florida.
