China has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
Chinese Ministry of Agriculture officials say H5N1 was found
on a poultry farm in the southern province of Hunan, where authorities culled nearly
18,000 chickens.
The Center for Disease Control says the Asian H5N1 strain is
especially deadly for poultry.
A similar virus, H5N2, resulted in the loss of millions of chickens
and turkeys in the U.S. five years ago.
