A University of Maryland extension agent says farmer suicides come in waves and with recent struggles in agriculture comes increased stress.
Charles Schuster spoke at a National Corn Growers congress last month addressing mental health in the farming community. He said the combination of uncertainty in the commodity market, bad weather and tough growing seasons have led to a variety of farmers having trouble making ends meet.
“They look at the fact that the land has been in the family for generations and it’s under their watch and they’re potentially going to lose it,” Schuster said.
