HPAI reported in southern Michigan

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a backyard flock in Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirms a flock in Cass County tested positive for the virus, the first domestic case in the state reported since March.

State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says the virus is still very present and circulating in the environment.  If avian influenza is suspected in domestic birds, the department should be contacted immediately.  Signs may include multiple sudden deaths in a flock, a drop in egg production, or an increase in sick birds.
