Iowa farmers had 48 percent of the state’s expected corn crop planted as of Sunday, just over a week behind the five-year average of 76 percent. Only five percent of the corn crop had emerged.
West central Iowa had the highest percentage of corn planted at 67 percent, while northeast Iowa had the lowest percentage at 24 percent.
The Ag Statistic Service notes that it’s just the fifth time in 40 years that less than half of Iowa’s corn crop has been planted by May 12th.
