A northwest Iowa crop and livestock producer is getting good results from a mix of cover crops.
Nathan Anderson grows corn, soybeans, and has a cow/calf operation in Cherokee County. He says they use various cover crop species to feed livestock and improve soil health.
“Agronomically, they fit the niche that we provide in a corn and soybean system. So species like cereal rye, winter rye, that does well when it’s cold, that can germinate in a variety of conditions, and that can generate a lot of biomass.”
Speaking to Brownfield at the Practical Farmers of Iowa Conference in Des Moines Friday, he said they also seed spring barley, turnips, radish, winter peas, and buckwheat.
