Iowa picks up needed precipitation

Much needed precipitation moved across Iowa last week.

In its first weekly crop progress and condition report of 2024, the USDA says rain and snow limited fieldwork but boosted soil moisture levels.

Still, topsoil moisture is just 41 percent adequate to surplus while subsoil moisture is rated 24 percent adequate to surplus.

There were reports of farmers applying anhydrous, manure, and dry fertilizer.

Oat seeding has surpassed 20 percent, about a week and a half ahead of both last year and the five-year average.
