Japanese encephalitis virus a focus for Swine Health Information Center

The Swine Health Information Center is ramping up efforts to prepare the U.S. pork industry for the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).

SHIC executive director Megan Niederwerder says JEV has been endemic in several Asian countries and expanded to Australia in 2022.

“It continues to be a risk for introduction into the U.S. It is currently not in the U.S., but we want to do everything to continue that negative status here in the U.S.”

She tells Brownfield the virus is mosquito-borne and can cause reproductive outcomes on sow farms like still births, abortions, and mummified fetuses.
