Kentucky State University recently received a $600,000 grant to fund research focused on nitrogen management in soybean production.
Dr. Anuj Chiluwal, assistant professor of agronomy and project director says there is an urgent need to improve soybean seed protein concentration to make U.S. soybeans competitive in a global feed market. Many soybean producers have struggled to produce soybeans that meet the minimum protein threshold for high-quality animal feed.
Previous studies have found that low protein concentration could be linked to nitrogen levels and this study will evaluate what levels and timings of late-season nitrogen applications are most effective on soybean yields and seed composition.
The research, titled Optimizing nitrogen management in soybean, integrating manual and high throughput aerial phenotyping, is funded for 2023 to 2026.
