Lawmakers ask for $75 million to protect against ASF

Seven lawmakers are urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to include $75 million dollars in the next appropriations bill for protections against African Swine Fever.

The funds would be designated for the National Veterinary Stockpile for large animal depopulation and disposal equipment, additional staff for APHIS Veterinary Services for crisis response, and the National Animal Health Laboratory Network.

In a letter, lawmakers say the money would ensure pork producers don’t suffer the consequences from a potential ASF outbreak.

The National Pork Producers Council says it’s critical USDA receives adequate funds to address ASF and are grateful to the lawmakers who made the request.
