Materials, biosecurity increasing pork facility costs

An official with a large pork producer says the cost of facilities and biosecurity has been going up. 

Dr. Cameron Schmitt is a second-generation veterinarian who works for Pipestone System.  He tells Brownfield the cost of building a facility can exceed 25-hundred dollars per sow space. “Over the last 15 years, they definitely have, probably, at least doubled in cost of the brick and mortar. We’ve seen that not just in the cost of sow space, we’ve also seen that in the cost of wean to finish spaces.”

And, Schmitt says it also costs more to build and manage swine production sites because of increased bio-security.
