The corn disease tar spot has been discovered in Minnesota
for the first time.
University of Minnesota Extension plant pathologist Dean Malvick tells Brownfield tar spot was first found in the U.S. four years ago and has now been confirmed in six states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan).
“Last year it was certainly confirmed that it can be a significant corn disease causing significant losses to corn. Generally wet and cooler conditions seem to favor it, and obviously it occurs mostly where it’s been before.”
Tar spot was identified in Fillmore County in the southeast
corner of Minnesota.
