Missouri legislature passes “fake meat” bill

The Missouri legislature has passed a bill banning non-meat products that claim to be LIKE meat from using a label that says meat.

Mike Deering, executive vice president of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, calls it a victory for cattle producers and all of Missouri agriculture, “We are taking measures here to be the first state in the nation to eliminate that confusion, to force companies to market with integrity, to be honest with the consumer, to prevent weakening value of the products that farm and ranch families raise here in the state.”

The labeling measure is part of an omnibus agriculture bill that passed on Thursday.
