weeds are the biggest enemy on a no-till research farm growing hemp this year.
Talon Becker with the University of Illinois’ Ewing Demonstration Center says the plots they planted hemp in have been no-till for more than 20 years, and with limited herbicide options, morning glories and waterhemp have taken over.
“One of the challenges of hemp production currently is that there are no herbicides labeled for in-season use. That includes any herbicide that has residual activity past application.”
He tells Brownfield delayed planting allowed weeds to get ahead of the crop, so he is hoping to reach their goal planting date in 2020.
