North Carolina’s state veterinarian says the loss of livestock from Hurricane Florence is minimal, “Ninety-nine percent of the animals in our state of North Carolina under production are healthy and well.” Dr. Doug Meckes says more losses are expected but officials will be on the ground as soon as today, where possible, to prepare for cleanup and carcass disposal of hogs and poultry, “Our marching orders from Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler is not to allow environmental problems be associated with our mortality management.”
He says plans and procedures in the pork and poultry industries that grew out lessons learned from past hurricanes have helped.
