The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) wants the USDA—not the FDA— to have oversight of lab-grown fake meat products.
NCBA president Kevin Kester says any product classified as meat needs to be inspected by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
“We want to make sure that lab-based products have to follow the same standards as we do,” Kester says. “We’re not against the science whatsoever, but we just want to make sure it’s a level playing field and that we have safe products, in the future, coming out of laboratories.”
NCBA accuses the FDA of a “regulatory power grab” by trying to assert regulatory jurisdiction over lab-grown fake meat.
