New dairy insurance program covers 3 billion pounds of milk and growing

The new dairy revenue protection insurance program is expected to cover about five percent of milk production in the U.S. during the first quarter, and a USDA official says many producers have already signed up.

“It went on sale October 9th and we’re up 1.5 billion pounds of milk already covered.”

Martin Barbre with USDA’s Risk Management Agency tells Brownfield different size dairy operations are utilizing the program.  “It’s getting scattered around, we’re getting policies in several states now.
