The National Milk Producers Federation says nutrition confusion by consumers is one of the reasons they want to see the FDA enforce labeling restrictions.
NMPF’s Alan Bjerga tells Brownfield a survey commissioned by Dairy Management found nearly two-thirds of consumers believe almond-based drinks have the same or superior nutrition content to cow’s milk, but that’s not the case. “In reality, a lot of your almond beverages have one-eighth as much protein, a lot of additives and non-nutrition factors that something that doesn’t come from an animal doesn’t have.”
He says the term ‘milk’ has a nutrition halo and products labeled as such are perceived to be more nutritious.
